Our Mission
We are what we eat and we also are what we breathe. Most of us are concerned about the environment, but when it comes to the environment in our own home, we often choose products that are harmful to our families and ourselves.
That’s why we started Inhabiteriors.
We were shocked to read an EPA survey that concluded that indoor air was 3 to 70 times more polluted than outdoor air.
When was the last time you thought about indoor air quality and how it affects your health and the environment?
There is growing evidence of connections between exposure to environmental toxins and illness. Breast cancer, asthma, heart disease, respiratory diseases, even neurological and reproductive development all have been linked to living in a toxic world. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) studied nine people who do not work with chemicals to find out just what kind of toxic burden people are carrying and found that the load is heavy.
This group’s total body burden was 167 synthetic chemicals. Of the 167 chemicals found, 76 cause cancer in humans or animals, 94 are toxic to the brain and nervous system, and 79 cause birth defects or abnormal development.
Many of the chemicals used in home furnishings are not approved for use in our clothing or bedding. They are not meant to come in contact with our skin. Yet, how many of us have pets or children who crawl, nap, and play on our carpets? How many of us sit or lie on the floor when watching television? How many of us live in energy-efficient new homes which seal the air in, not allowing fresh air to replace the gasses given off by our shiny, stain resistant, flame-retardant, insect, fungus, and bacteria-proof carpeting and fabric?
Inhabiteriors offers you fabrics for your home which do not contain harmful substances.
We print on recycled chlorine-free paper, using water based soy and vegetable base inks. Our website is also 100 percent powered by solar energy.
Inhabiteriors sources production partners who strive to meet the following basic standards:
- Enzymatic or oxidative de-sizing only, and no petroleum-based surfactants
- Detergents, degreasers, surfactants and soaps must be biodegradable
- No chlorine or sulfur-based bleaching
- No halogenated solvents or any organic solvent containing benzene
- No polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)
- No formaldehyde
- No chlorine containing compounds such as chlorophenols (as TCP, PCP) sodium hypochlorite (NaOCL)
- No heavy metals such as antimony, arsenic, lead, chromium or mercury
- No amine-releasing AZO colorants, and no flame retardants with PBDEs or BFRs
